Ectopic Lingual Thyroid: Imaging Features
نویسندگان
چکیده
A 27 year old female patient presented with dysphagia and foreign body sensation in the throat since 3 months. She had no history of either past or present thyroid disease. The past medical history of the patient was insignificant, and she was not currently taking any medication. Neck examination revealed neither palpable thyroid gland, cervical lymphadenopathy nor any other palpable masses. Thyroid function tests (TFT) demonstrated euthyroid levels. Other laboratory tests were within normal limits. Throat examination revealed nodular masses at the base of the tongue with congested vessels on the surface Figure 1. Laryngoscopy was performed and showed the presence of a mass at the base of the tongue, covered with intact mucosa and displacement of the uvula.

Lingual Thyroid: A Case Report and Literature Review
Thyroid ectopia is a dysgenesis of thyroid gland and Lingual position represents the most frequent ectopic location accounting up to 90% of ectopic cases. Hypothyroidism is commonly present because of absence of a normal thyroid gland in most instances. Primary hypothyroidism in juvenile population generally leads to retardation of linear growth and delay or even arrested puberty. We present a ...
متن کاملLingual thyroid causing dysphonia: evaluation and management. Case report.
CONTEXT Lingual thyroid gland is a rare clinical entity that is caused by the failure of the thyroid gland to descend to a normal cervical location during embryogenesis. The occurrence of an ectopic thyroid gland located at the base of the tongue may cause problems for the patient, with symptoms of dysphagia, dysphonia, upper airway obstruction or even hemorrhage at any time from infancy throug...
متن کاملDiagnostic evaluation of a case of lingual thyroid ectopia
Thyroid ectopia can occur when the process of thyroid embryogenesis fails. Here, we present the case of a 30-year-old woman with thyroid ectopia that was discovered during magnetic resonance imaging of cervical spine for referred neck pain. Imaging revealed the presence of an encapsulated mass at the base of her tongue. The patient was not symptomatic for any compression of the airways. Diagnos...
متن کاملThyroglossal Duct Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma and Synchronous Lingual Thyroid Atypia.
Thyroglossal duct and lingual thyroid ectopic lesions are exceedingly rare synchronous findings. Papillary thyroid carcinoma of these ectopic thyroid sites is well understood but still a rare finding. This case points to some management nuances in regard to ectopic thyroid screening with imaging and also shows the effectiveness of minimally invasive transoral robotic surgery for lingual thyroid.
متن کاملImaging Findings in Lingual Thyroid: apropos of Two Cases
Lingual thyroid is a developmental anomaly caused by undescended thyroid tissue at the base of the tongue. Lingual thyroid is found predominantly in females and comprises 90% of ectopic thyroid tissue (1). In the majority of patients, the lingual thyroid is the only functioning thyroid gland tissue. Therefore early diagnosis with imaging techniques is clinically important to avoid permanent hyp...
متن کاملIncidental Finding of Dual Ectopic Thyroid on Computed Tomography Angiography
The presence of simultaneous two ectopic foci of thyroid tissue (dual ectopic thyroid) is rare, and few cases have been reported in the literature. The ectopic thyroid tissue is an extremely uncommon embryological aberration due to the alterations occurring during the embryological development with incomplete migration of thyroid precursors. Commonly ectopic thyroid tissue is a midline structur...
